Reliable Steam Engine Co.

We are in the process of process of converting our boat plans to a ".dfx" format and making sure that they are easily buildable out of sheet materials (wood, steel, aluminum). This will allow our customers to use automated techniques for cutting materials to size. We are also planning a couple of "new" boats: a 27 foot version of our popular Salty and finally a design for the irrepressible Katy, a 20' trailerable sternwheel hull with authentic, longstroke engines, capable of floating on 6" of "dew" and jaunty as a new straw "boater".

Traveler

Traveler

Length Overall......................... 15' 6"
Length Water Line................. 14' 10"
Beam......................................... 5' 6"
Draft.......................................... 1' 6"
Speed.............................. 9 - 10 mph
Engine.................... 5 HP Compound
Boiler........................ 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.01
pdf  file $ 40

Seaworthy, semi-planing, trailerable hull to be built of plywood or other flat sheet material and amiable to "stitch-and-tape" construction. With a three bladed, 14" x 17" propeller and 600 - 700 engine rpms, this boat is capable of 9 - 10 mph. The drawings give all needed information. This is a boat that can be built in your garage with minimal tools and experience. Two prints with table of offsets.

Salty

Salty

Length Overall............................. 20'
Length Water Line................... 18' 4"
Beam......................................... 7' 4"
Draft............................................... 2'
Displacement..................... 6,200 lbs.
Engine............................. see below
Boiler........................ 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.02
pdf  file $ 50

Salty is her name and "salty" is what she is. Traditional quarter stern towboat hull design, adapted for three chine construction. This enables the use of flat sheet material such as plywood in a "stitch-and-tape" construction. Depending on the "pulling power" desired, you can use the 5 HP Compound, 6 HP Double Simple, or 7 HP Triple for power. While not recommended for the beginner, the 5 sheets of plans are very comprehensive. A good, seaworthy boat that is still trailerable.

Monitor

Monitor

Length Overall............................. 22'
Length Water Line................. 21' 10"
Beam......................................... 6' 8"
Draft............................................... 1'
Displacement..................... 4,950 lbs.
Engine............................. see below
Boiler........................ 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.03
pdf  file $ 50

For the person who wants a "distinctive" steamboat, the Monitor will definitely fit the bill. Like the original, she has very low freeboard and is best suited for calmer waters. Construction of the hull is even easier than Traveler. The detail work ( which can make this boat a real "showpiece" ) is in the above deck coaming and pilothouse. Powering can be as with Salty and, since Monitor is over 1,000 lbs. lighter, she should move faster than her namesake. Plans are complete, detailed, and include table of offsets.

Rebel

Rebel

Length Overall......................... 20' 4"
Length Water Line................... 17' 1"
Hull Beam...................................... 5'
Beam over Paddles....................... 7'
Draft............................................ 10"
Engine...................... Walking Beam
Boiler........................ 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.04
pdf  file $ 50

The slow, quiet sound of paddle wheels moving through the water must be experienced to be believed - and Rebel will allow you to do that. Her shallow draft allows you go into weed choked backwaters, and the quiet of the walking beam engine will let you sneak up on waterfowl - a great steamboat for bird-watching. Graceful lines suitable for flatsheet material construction ( one drawing is for steel construction ). She can be constructed in your garage and the drawings thoroughly detail fabrication of the paddle wheels and their mounting. You may view brief (3.16MB) movie (.avi) clip HERE

GO HERE for a profile line drawing with some details of Rebel. If you use "landscape" and "fit to page" on your printer you will get a nice 10-1/2" x 7" print to thumbtack to your wall.

Panatela

Panatela

Length Overall............................. 25'
Length Water Line................... 21' 8"
Beam....................................... 4' 10"
Draft............................................ 10"
Engine.................... 5 HP Compound
Boiler........................ 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.05
pdf  file $ 50

If you want something that will show those "stinkpot" boaters speed, Panatela ( named after the "trim" cigar ) will show them her heels. Although the 5 HP Compound and 4 - 7 HP Ofeldt boiler are recommended, if you were to fit the High Speed Double Simple engine and use the 15 - 40 HP Monotube Boiler, she'd "leap out from under ya". Of flat sheet plywood construction and hard chine, she is still a graceful boat - but not designed for "open water".

Gypsy

Gypsy

Length Overall............................. 28'
Length Water Line................... 20' 6"
Beam......................................... 7' 6"
Draft............................................ 10"
Displacement..................... 4,440 lbs.
Paddle Speed................. 33 - 60 rpm
Engine....High Speed Double Simple
Boiler..................... 15 - 40 HP Ofeldt

PLANS: BT.06
pdf  file $ 50

The "cartoon" does not show her best arrangement, which is with a simple canopy aft and pilot house set at main deck level. The good underwater lines of the hard chine hull will allow for many variations in cabin ( or no cabin ) on this trailerable stern wheeler. The pitman arms driving the stern wheel receive their motion from a jackshaft, which is chain driven by either a 10 - 15 HP steam or 40 HP gasoline engine. Two horizontal, long stroke engines, designed for stern wheel service could also be used to create true authenticity. The drawings show steel construction, but 1/2" plywood could be used. Construction of the stern wheel is detailed.

Reverie

Reverie II

Length @ Sheer..................... 39' 11"
Length Water Line................... 34' 3"
Beam......................................... 8' 1"
Draft.......................................... 2' 2"
Engine........ V-4 Single Acting 40 HP
Boiler..................... 40 HP Monotube

PLANS: BT.07
pdf  file $ 50

Reverie II  is a "under 40 foot", fan tail, clipper bow, steam yacht. She carries steadying sails and, with her spacious, open, canopied after deck is a perfect "day boat". The "house" is adequate to for provide "overnighting" accomodations as well as the ubiquitous "porta potty". Certainly not a project for the "beginner", her hard chine construction and detailed prints will allow an experienced, non-professional to built her.
